Wednesday in Grade 5

At the beginning of the day, the Big Bear watched as students gave peer feedback on the research-based essays the class has been working on.
All day students celebrated reading and books, with a special We LOVE Reading day.  Students shared favorite reading memories and were treated to a special read aloud from Mrs. Magee, who read the book The Dot!  All through the school students buzzed about reading. All Bowman Teachers and staff love to teach reading!

A Time Traveling Bear in Mr. Taylor's Fifth Grade

Today the bear traveled back in time to the 1770s with a 5th grade class. Students have been researching colonial times to write a research based argument essay about events leading up to the American Revolution. Each student has created a character and is writing from the perspective of this colonist.

Students also used indoor recess time to give the bear some authentic clothing and accessories including spectacles, a tricorn hat with powdered wig, some fancy silk cuffs, and more.

Designing Plans for Tree Houses!

In Room 8 students are designing tree houses as part of an Art and Engineering project with Mrs. O'Connor.  The Big Bear is wondering if someone will be able to build a Tree House big enough for a very big bear!

Mystery Reading in Room 8

Students in Mr. Avery's Third Grade are enjoying a new Mystery Unit in Reading.  As students read mysteries they look for clues about characters and motivations and take their thinking deeper.

A Bear in Grade 3 - Hello Mr. Avery!

This week the Star Student Bear is visiting Mr. Avery's Third Grade class.  Here he is working on multiplication facts with the computer program "Fasst Math".  Students work at their own levels and try to get faster and faster at fact recall.  Automatic recall of facts makes problem-solving easier.

Student in Mr. Avery's room have been working on a Persuasive Writing unit.  Here they are reviewing persuasive writing strategies during writers workshop - looking to make their writing stronger and stronger.
What a wonderful time to be a BEAR in school.

Science in Second Grade is VERY COOL!

Dear Bowman Bear Blog,
Students here are observing a chemical reaction that produced rust. They've also wrote their own recipes for a change. They are preparing for a science talk. I am interested in hearing that next.

Dear Bowman Bear Blog,
I am ending with students involved in a science talk about their observations, predictions, comparisons, results  and conclusions. They are politely taking turns speaking and adding on to conversations about changes in states of matter.

Room 11 rocks with mathematics, science, social studies and lots of literacy. This was another fun visit. How lucky I  am to watch Bowman's classrooms filled with learning!

Celebrating Pi Day! (3 and a little more)

Dear Bowman Bear Blog,
I learned about Pi today. Students measured the circumference of my nose with yarn. Next, they used this yarn to see how many pieces they could cut from it to measure the diameter of my nose. Three pieces of this yarn and a bit more each measured the diameter of my nose.

A Busy Day after the Snow Day...

Big Bear here...  Today I am a star!  The children are reading the letter I wrote for the blog.  What fun it is to see my words in print.
I've noticed that Mrs. Barbacano's class really likes to READ!
I like to read too.  I wonder what your favorite books are...  I think my favorite book might be "Blueberries for Sal".  I used to be little - like the little bear in the story.
Indoor Recess is lots of fun.  Most days Bowman students go outside to play.  When it is below 18 degrees, we need to stay in. Inside we have lots of choices for what we can do.  Today a lot of children chose to play with LEGOS, and some children helped me work on my letters.  What a lucky Bear I am!

Second Grade with Mrs. Barbacano!

The Bowman Bear left a message for all of us from Mrs. Barbacano's class about his Monday...  I wonder if he is sitting with his nose against the glass -- wishing he had some second graders to keep him company...  Happy Snow Day
Dear Bowman, 3-13-17
I am writing to tell you that I am now in Grade 2, Room 11.  Today is Monday and I am watching the classroom from a yellow chair.  Thanks to Dr. Anton, I am able to have great posture to be able to sit upright and see what is going on in this room.  At 8:30am I watch students enter and start their day with what looks like a usual routine.  Morning Meeting at 8:45 is filled with warm greetings as students say “Hello” in _______________.  Highlights of the day included math where students are buying stuffed animals (like me) and adding two digit numbers.  Students are beginning to study India.  Many students are eager to say what they already know about India.  In reading, students are studying series books and characters.  One group is reading, Billy Bird by Dick King Smith. Animals talk in that book.  If only I could talk!  However, I can write.  Speaking of writing, students are starting realistic fiction.  They are choosing topics and characters.   As someone who is different, I felt welcome in this class.  Everyone was respectful and showed that they want me to be a part of their class.  I am looking forward to tomorrow!

Kindergartners take on the Bear Building Challenge!

Kindergartners in Mrs. Day's Room took on the "Big Bear" challenge.  After building a structure AS TALL AS A BEAR, they were challenged to create a structure for the Bear to be in.
Working together they carefully created walls to surround the bear.  Children needed to think about how high they could build before the walls would fall over.

They created supports and an entrance for the bear to get into his new home.  It was an amazing example of teamwork!

And there was a great celebration when students completed their task and were able to beat the challenge...  Lucky Bear with a new cozy home.  Wonder if he'll decide to hibernate now?

A Kindergarten Bear Loves Science with Mrs. Day

The Bowman Star Student Bear is very excited to be in Kindergarten in Mrs. Day's room.  What a welcome he got!
Students in Kindergarten are in a Science Unit called "Structures".  They are exploring all kinds of structures.
Today the children compared the size of the bear to the size of the structures...  Our Big Bear is happy to be BIG!  I wonder what it would take to make a structure as large as a very large BEAR?

Oh my gosh!  The children did it.  They made a structure bigger than a bear...  What kind of structure would you make to be as big as a bear?

I wonder if they could build a structure FOR a bear...  It's cold today and the Big Bear is considering hibernating until SPRING...

Even a Bear Needs to Practice Her Math Facts...

On Friday the Bowman Bear spent time practicing her Math Facts using the program Fasst Math.  The Bear and the Students use Fasst Math three times a week as a way to become more fluent in fact recall.  When one doesn't need to calculate the fact, there is a lot more space in memory to figure out more complex math problems!

At Bowman School there are many different kinds of programs that we use to explore and practice different aspects of the math content.  Some, like Fasst Math, are about the repetition.  Others are adaptive and help students identify and learn about aspects of the math content that they have not yet mastered.  And others are what we call "creation apps", they allow students to explain their thinking, record their words and show their solutions - so that they can share them later.

The Big Bear had an amazing week with Mrs. Bennett's Class.  He is off to Mrs. Day's Kindergarten now.

Creating Posters about Characters in Grade 3

The Star Student Bear LOVES working with third graders.  Here she is overseeing a poster one book club is creating to present to the class as a culminating character unit project.

Do you know what Book Clubs are?  The Star Student Bear was surprised to find out that students at Bowman read books together - just like an adult Book Club - and then get together to talk about the ideas in the book.  In third grade, students are learning all about characters, their motivation and how they change.  Third Grade book clubs help students compare ideas and think more deeply about how characters change over the course of a chapter book.  Who knew there was so much to talk about with children's books!

Who is that Classy Bear? Non Fiction Reading in 3B

Mrs. Bennett's class noticed that the Big Bear LOVES to read.  She just had to try on the 3D glasses to experience the complete effect of the new non-fiction book in the class library.  Lucky Bear!

A Bear Returns to Grade 3 with Mrs. Bennett!

The Star Student Bear returned to school after the break excited about her time away and eager to read more books with her favorite characters -- BEARS!

She is excited to be spending the week with Mrs. Bennett's third grade class where she is taking her lead from the third graders and choosing to read independently during QUIET TIME!

Ah, it is good to be a School Bear!
